Are You a Small Business?

A Small Business is one that is organized for profit; has a place of business in the United States; makes a significant contribution to the U.S. economy by paying taxes or using American products, materials or labor; and, does not exceed the numerical size standard for its industry.

In the manufacturing field, small businesses are usually defined as businesses that employ less than 500 persons. In the services, small businesses are usually defined as businesses that generate less than $5 million in gross annual receipts.  In broad terms, a small business is defined as any type of business that does not dominate its field of business.  The business may be a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, or any other legal form.

SBA's size standards define whether a business entity is small and, thus, eligible for Government programs and preferences reserved for "small business" concerns.  This lookup tool helps you to determine if you qualify as "small."
